Buchanan County Jail Overview
The Buchanan County Corrections Division operates the Buchanan County Jail / Law Enforcement Center at 501 Faraon Street in Saint Joseph. The county describes the Corrections Division as responsible for sentenced and non-sentenced inmates charged to the custody of the sheriff. In practice, that means the Buchanan County Jail is the local custody point for people arrested by the sheriff, St. Joseph Police, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and other agencies when they are booked into the county facility. It can also hold people serving local sentences, awaiting court, waiting on bond, or held under state-related custody labels while still physically in the county jail.
The county publishes unusually concrete operating details for the jail. The building has three separate housing units and a total bed capacity of 234 inmates. The Corrections Division also lists a 45-person staff allocation, including two divisional commanders, a Lieutenant of Custody, a Lieutenant of Compliance, sergeants, deputies, detention deputies, property clerks, kitchen staff, a digital download specialist, and a receptionist. The county does not publish a pod-by-pod housing map, but the roster can show the public housing facility value for a listed person.
Buchanan County Jail Roster Lookup
The official lookup route for this facility is the Buchanan County Sheriff's Dept Inmate Inquiry. It is a New World Systems / Tyler Technologies roster and is free to search without a login. The roster is the right place to start for current and recent Buchanan County jail custody. It is not the right lookup for a person already transferred to Missouri Department of Corrections custody, a sentenced federal prisoner, or an immigration detainee unless that person is also physically booked in the local jail.
Search results inspected in the research showed a roster table with photos, names, subject numbers, custody status, scheduled release dates, demographics, and housing facility labels. The detail page can add booking history, bond tables, court-date tables, charge tables, classification, prisoner type, and booking origin. A sample profile showed "State Prisoner" as a prisoner type while the housing facility remained Buchanan County Sheriff Department, which is a useful warning that custody status and physical jail location are not always the same thing.
- Open the official Buchanan County Sheriff's Dept Inmate Inquiry.
- Search by full or partial name, subject number, or booking number when known.
- Use the In Custody checkbox to narrow the search to people currently jailed.
- Use booking date fields or the Housing Facility filter when a broad name search returns too many matches.
- Open the name link in the result table to review booking, bond, court, charge, and housing details.

The roster image shows why a name search should be checked carefully: photos, subject numbers, booking status, and housing facility labels all help separate same-name entries.
Buchanan County Jail Contact
Jail status questions that the roster does not answer can be routed to the Corrections Division by phone or in person. The county publishes the main Corrections number as 816-236-8800. Public visitation appointments use a separate scheduling number, 816-236-8888. Attorney reservation questions use 816-236-8828. For records that are not visible on the jail roster, the sheriff records channel and the same Law Enforcement Center address are the practical fallback.

Buchanan County Jail Visitation
The county separates public visits, professional visits, and attorney visits. General public visitation is non-contact and by appointment. Visitors must be at least 18, present accepted current photo identification, dress properly, and check in 10 minutes early. The jail checks visitors for outstanding arrest warrants. Cell phones and recording devices are barred from general visitation areas, while professional visitors may use them in non-contact rooms when visiting a client.
| Visitor type | Schedule | Appointment and entry rules |
|---|---|---|
| General public | Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m., except Saturday holidays | One non-contact weekend visit. Schedule Monday-Thursday 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 1:30-5 p.m.; Friday 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. |
| Professional, non-attorney | Monday-Friday except holidays, 8 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. | Official ID requirements apply. Visitors are subject to search and should arrive 15 minutes early. |
| Attorney | Monday-Friday except holidays, 8 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m.; immediate post-arrest contact can occur in the no-contact bond room | Reservations may be made at 816-236-8828. Valid bar card and driver's license are required. |

The schedule matters because a missed check-in or an unscheduled Saturday visit can cancel the visit before the person reaches the visitation room.
Buchanan County Jail Mail and Money
Jail mail must use the published county format and move through USPS. Incoming letters are subject to search. Packages are not accepted. The envelope must include a full and accurate return address, including the sender's full name and return mailing address. The county allows pictures but limits them to no more than three per letter.
Money and bonding are handled through Turnkey Corrections kiosks and InmateCanteen. The lobby kiosk accepts cash or credit card for inmate accounts and is also used for bonding. The booking-area kiosk can allow an inmate to self-bond by cash or credit card during booking. The jail no longer accepts cash, checks, or money orders handed to staff for bonding or commissary, and prepaid cards are not accepted by the Turnkey kiosk.

The posted cutoff times are important for families because a late deposit may miss the next commissary delivery cycle.
Buchanan County Jail Booking
Buchanan County does not publish a full intake manual, but the roster shows the public record created during booking. A person brought to the Law Enforcement Center can receive or reuse a subject number, receive a booking number, have a booking photo taken, and have demographic information entered. The public detail page can then show booking date, release date if posted, scheduled release date, prisoner type, classification, housing facility, bond, court information, and charge data.
Bond details should be checked against the court and the jail before anyone assumes payment will cause release. A roster profile can show cash bond, total bond, total bail, court dates, and docket numbers. Holds, detainers, no-bond orders, warrants, state custody, or court orders can still block release. For the broader county jail roster workflow, the Buchanan County inmate records page explains how to read profile fields and when to check court records after booking.
- Booking number
- The event number for one jail admission, observed in the roster format as a year plus sequence number.
- Subject number
- The person-level identifier used by the jail system across entries.
- Classification
- The jail custody or housing assessment shown on the public profile when entered.
- Detainer
- A hold or request from another agency or jurisdiction that may affect release.
Buchanan County Jail Records Access
The roster is the first access channel, but it is not the only one. If a booking record, booking photo, old release record, or arrest report is not available online, the sheriff and jail records fallback is the Law Enforcement Center at 501 Faraon Street and 816-236-8800. A formal request should identify the person, booking number if known, booking date, and the exact record being requested. Missouri public-record language can be used for arrest and detention records, subject to closure rules and court orders. The Buchanan County Sheriff MO app is another sheriff communication channel, but the app-store text confirmed tips, sex offender information, opioid resources, staff directory, and public safety news rather than an app-only jail roster.
If St. Joseph Police created the report tied to the jail booking, the city Records Unit may be the record holder for the police report. The research found St. Joseph Records Unit hours of Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., phone 816-271-4705, and fees of $30 per hour plus $0.10 per page. Court charges, docket events, amended charges, dismissals, and convictions are checked through Missouri Case.net or the Buchanan County Circuit Clerk rather than the jail. The Buchanan County inmate population hub separates the local jail, state prison, federal, and immigration lookup routes.
Note: Confirm custody, bond, and visit status with the jail before travel because roster entries can change quickly.
